English Walnut

English Walnut – Description – Uses – Examples of work

Walnut one of my favorite woods.

I thought I would write about each type of wood I have in my collection of English hardwoods to assist in the selection process when commissioning furniture and other items. Also including examples of work.

I have only included woods that I have sufficient quantities in stock to produce commissions from.

WalnutEnglish Walnut – Varies in colour from dark chocolate-brown to lighter pale brown. Sapwood is white to brown. Can have good figuring such as pips and flame cut grain. Centre of branches and tree has a hole in center of growth rings. excellent wood for furniture, boards and turning. A fine finish can be obtained and good patina with wax polishing.

English walnut is scarce and hard to find, it is still one of the woods that I purchase or at least go and look at if a tree is offered to me. This picture is the last tree I purchased, unfortunately it had been growing on a village green all its life and had so many nails in it became virtually unusable. The saw blade was destroyed by the nails and most of the tree came home in large lumps from the timber yard.
