Elm – Description – Uses – Examples of work

Elm also one of my favorite woods. But it does have a smell associated with it, when working with it, which is not too pleasant – how can I put it – dogs bottom springs to mind. But when a piece is finished it has no smell. I’m continuing to write about each type of wood I have in my collection of English hardwoods to assist in the selection process when commissioning furniture and other items. Also including examples of my work.

I have only included woods that I have sufficient quantities in stock to produce commissions from.

Elm – A light brown coloured wood with interesting grain which can contain yellow and green colours were the tree has taken in different minerals whilst growing. Interesting burrs and figuring can be found in this hard-wearing wood. A “lively” wood prone to movement. Used for flooring, furniture, boards and turned work. Used in Roman and medieval times for drain pipes so good water and rot resistance. It is in short supply due to Dutch Elm disease but it can still be found in odd pockets of the country and Scotland.
